The TweetUp was the perfect opportunity to put IRL faces will all of those @ Twitter handles that I have been conversing with in cyberspace.

It was especially fun to have the opportunity to talk about Twitter because my program on Friday at 10 a.m. with Tammie Smoot, Kelly Fink and Linda Hebert is Friend, Fan, Follow or Fail: Discover the Basics of Social Networking and I’m covering, you guessed it, Twitter.

It was also fun to give some stats from the recently released @Sysomos in-depth report of Twitter’s Growth from 2009 to 2010. Just released in December 2010, these are very current stats.

Users with 100+ friends have increased by three-fold to 21% since 2009.

22.5% of users accounted for about 90% of all activity.

80% users have made fewer than 500 tweets.

Justin Bieber is one of top two-word phrases and top name in user’s bios.

Significantly more users are disclosing their location, bio and web information in Twitter profiles.

In the true spirit of Twitter and social networking, I was able to create a list of the top 11 Twitter Suggestions for 2011:

11 – @BryanBruce – Identify demand drivers for your business and make sure you integrate your brand
10 – @feritae ? Teri Fay Edwards – Do u want your mom, your boss, your spouse or kids to read it? If it will embarrass u, it WILL show up if they google you!
9 – @CarolFlammer – Tweeting is like writing on the www in permanent ink, make mine a Sharpie
8 – @SteveKleber – Ask questions.” You’d be surprised how many are willing to respond/give advice, & there are no stupid questions (…usually!)
7 – @MascoCorp – To me, Twitter is about individuals as well as “the Masses.” Know your audience & tailor your msg to be relevant & engaging.
6 – @mRELEVANCE – use effective hashtags so you can be part of specific events and see what is ‘happening’ on the show floor at #IBS2011
5 – @EFL_Guy – Stephen Davis – During seminars we ‘Team Tweet” so we can all get a feel of other lectures and topics. Fun way to get ‘sound bites’!
4 – @MattMorrow – CEO of Springfield HBA – We’re putting twitter list “myhba people” feeding on front page of new HBA site. Now any member can b on homepg jus by tweeting.
3 – @Creating Wow – Meredith Oliver – my top twitter tip is be yourself, be fun and personal and please no more motivational quotes!
2 – @NoraDePalma – Write like a person, not a brand
1 – @AtlantaPR – What you say does not have to be personal, but it should have personality

Presented by the Atlanta 50+ Council, this is a great way to sharpen your skills.

As one of the University’s tenured professors (wink wink), I’ll be presenting a 3 hour seminar (GREC credits pending) on “How to Use Social Media as a Marketing Tool.” If you want to learn how social media can help your business reach existing customers AND build relationships with new ones, this is the class for you.

Social Media as a Marketing Tool will cover the “how to” basics for promoting your business through social networking and blogging. Learn how to create an effective integrated strategy for your business and save time online. Bring your laptop and come prepared to set up sites and get answers to all of your questions.

This will be the first time that this conference is offered in Atlanta and will feature 16 different accredited educational sessions taught by leading experts in the 50+ housing industry.

The cost of the conference is $80 for 50+ council members and $125 for non-council members. If you’re looking to take advantage of additional savings, non-council members can increase their value by simultaneously becoming a member of the Atlanta 50+ Housing Council and registering for the conference for only $150. That’s a savings of $75.

Space is limited, so act fast to take advantage of this offer. For more information about 50+ University Day, including online registration and class schedule, visit the website.

A recent report by real estate advisory firm RCLCO reveals that the role of women not only is changing, but has changed. In 1978, 60-percent of all college graduates were men. Today, 60-percent of all college graduates are women and they are also now the majority in the workforce. RCLCO predicts that by 2015, WINKS (Gen Y women with incomes over $50,000 a year and no kids) will dominate the urban landscape. So, what is SHE looking for? She prefers urban or urbanlite areas for both home and work. She wants to live in a walkable area with convenience to transit and she is willing to pay a premium to get what she wants. Dersin closes her article by saying “the most critical imperative (and perhaps the most difficult)? Figure out what women want. . . ”

We did an online poll of the participants. The question posed was, “What types of social media are you using for your business?” The poll results are pictured, but I’ll post the results as well:

Blogs – 22%
LinkedIn – 51%
Facebook – 73%
Twitter – 19%
YouTube – 24%
Other – 14%

Ok, so in terms of what I do on a daily basis, this is HUGE! With only 22% of the companies on the call using a corporate blog, that means that 78% need one! Having the blog work as the engine of your social media program integrates your program. It makes the program less work. Companies can reduce the amount of time needed in social media management by 50% while increasing their website traffic by 25 – 50%. Integrating this piece is key!

This seminar is part of a 5 part NAHB webinar series called Building Conversations, so make sure to check it out!

If so, bring your laptop and join us for a fun and exciting Social Media Lab at GNTC (Georgia Northwestern Technical College) in Rome, Georgia. This hand-on lab will help you start using social media immediately.

Social Media Lab is a six-week program offering the “how to” basics for promoting your business through social networking and blogging. Each week we will cover building a different site in a 3-hour lab. Find out from the experts how to build your business as you build Friends, Fans, and Followers.

Labs will be held on the Floyd Campus on Monday mornings from 9 a.m. until noon. The spring Lab will be held April 12 – May 17. Classes can be taken separately, but for the best overview and value, register for all six weeks together! Register for individual weeks for $79 each ($158 for 2-week blogging session), or for all six for $349. Register for the complete program and bring a friend, and get $10 off the second registration. Register five or more people together and receive a 5% discount on all registrations! Register at GNTC.

Lab Overview – April 12
What is it? What’s in it for you? How can engaging in social media help your business? Do you know the difference between LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook? And just what in the world is Blogging? In this introductory class you will learn the basics and the purpose of each of these, and how integrating them will give you the greatest ban for your buck. This first week sets the stage for the remaining sessions.

Twitter – April 19
Create a Twitter account and learn proper twittiquette. Tweeting is like text messaging to the world; just don’t say anything you don’t want Grandma to see! Find out what it means to follow and be followed. Although it may sound like it, it’s really not cyber-stalking at all!

LinkedIn – April 26
From building your personal profile to participating in groups, learn the ins and outs for getting the most of this online Rolodex and resume.

Facebook – May 3
Build a Fan Page and find out ways to promote it to your friends and customers. This is one online cocktail party you don’t want to miss.

Blog Building – May 10 & 17
