It is by Mitch Joel the President of Twist Image and author of Six Pixels of Separation.

Compassion:

“It’s nothing personal, it’s just business.”

We spend more than 50% of our lives at work. Why would anyone want to wake up in the morning and go to work with that attitude? If you don’t make it personal, and if you don’t make it count, what’s the point?

Business is missing one important core value: compassion.
“Between work and family, I have no time for community.”

This is is something everyone feels at some point in their lives. But think about it: What if we made community an integral part of our business? What if we recognized that we can’t have strong businesses without a strong community and we can’t have a strong community without compassion?

The real way strong communities are built is through the compassion we extend to others. Both to those we know, and to those we don’t know.

The Internet is amazing because it connects us all. Compassion for those around us now extends globally and beyond our physical boundaries.

We can all do more for each other and be better.

Be compassionate to everyone no matter the level of connection.

Make compassion a core business value.

Start with a smile to a stranger.

Start by getting others to nod in agreement when you say: “If we’re not compassionate to one another, what’s the point in the end?”

Get the complete free ebook by Seth Godin – What Matters Now.

Let’s all figure out what matters to us now. Take a break from all the noise and take time for a long walk, a drink with friends or a rowdy wrestle with man’s best friend. Give back to the community that supports your business. They will not only appreciate it, but more business will undoubtedly follow.

As you can see from these photos, it has been a Topsy Turvy Mother’s Day at the farm! Reminiscent of the world of Dr. Seuss, when I took the photo of the Topsy Turvy I accidentally moved the camera and got a really crazy shot. I assure you that our house is not bent!

Now I’m growing tomatoes upside down! It will be interesting to see if each plant really produces 50 pounds of tomatoes like the ads claim. Tomatoes are supposed to grow 20-percent faster and no staking is required. The downside is that I have to try to remember to water them every day.

My friend Karla Sinclair, Publisher of Atlanta Daybook shared this information from the Possible Woman conference held recently in Atlanta. It is really great information and I hope it will provide you with additional motivation to continue to be the shining star that you are.

Political commentator Donna Brazile gave the keynote address which focused on women attaining and managing power.

Ten Tips from Donna Brazile:

Know your power and believe in yourself.

Be true to yourself and visualize.

Identify role models and mentors.

Nourish your ambition.

Dare to dream and communicate clearly.

Set a strategy for success and write it down.

Remove stumbling blocks and remain steadfast despite the obstacles.

If you get knocked down, get back up.

Don’t be afraid of controversy.

Stir the waters. Sometimes making waves is the only way to move forward.

Atlanta now tops the lists of places to be in social media marketing. Does your small business Tweet? Do you have a Facebook page? If the answer is no, maybe it is time to look into a social media program. Just last week Atlanta was listed as one of the top Twitter cities of the world. Listed at #5, Atlanta is in good company coming in just behind London, Los Angeles, Chicago and New York.

During 2009, Atlanta was one of the fastest growing cities in terms of Facebook users with more than 142% growth during the first half of the year. In numbers of Facebook users Atlanta is second only to New York! With all of these potential consumers flocking to Facebook and Twitter, it is more important than even to make sure your small business has a presence on the sites.

A blog will help you develop your messages and save time spent on social media by reducing the number of places you need to update. While there aren’t stats on blogging readily available for Atlanta only, national and worldwide stats show how popular blogging has become:

57 million Americans read blogs

12 million American adults maintain a blog

Technorati tracks 70 million blogs

Over 120 thousand blogs created every day

1.4 million new blog posts daily

22 out of top 100 most popular Web sites in the world are blogs

89% of companies surveyed think blogs will be even more important in the next 5 years

Will you be mine? Remember the days of passing Valentine’s to everyone in the class? Or how about making chains of cupids or homemade Valentine cards? Now we “passs” Valentine’s online via Facebook and the other social networking sites. I love all the pretty flowers, hearts and puppies I have received the last few days.

Social networking has made it much easier to stay in touch with the ones we love – friends, family and even those online friends that we have never even met IRL (in real life). Will you get a video valentine this year, or will your best gift still be a box of chocolates?

Valentine’s Day started in the middle ages and is regarded as a celebration of love and affection between lovers. It is celebrated by many countries and is the second largest card-sending holiday of the year behind Christmas. Of course, now it may become a high Internet traffic day with all the online greetings.

Let me know how you are celebrating Valentine’s Day. I look forward to seeing you on the social networking sites!

52% of Americans send test messages.

A recent study on Wireless Internet use by Pew discovered that more than 50% of American adults use their mobile phones for non-voice data each day. Non-voice data includes using smart phones and cell phones for texting, taking photos, playing games, surfing the Web and sending email.

And here is a scary statistic: 25% of Americans admit that they text while driving.

Lucky for us, companies like Vlingo have invented “voice user interface” technology that allows people to control their cell phones by talking to the phone. “We often like to say 26 percent of people admit to driving while texting. We are sure that underestimates the problem,” said Dave Grannan, of Vlingo. Click here for more results of the Vlingo survey. Let’s all pledge to text only while parked.

The Pew study says, “Sending text messages remains the mainstay activity for cell phone users.” As companies seek ways to engage buyers through permission-based mediums, texting will no doubt continue to be hot.

Text messaging can provide you with ways to send specials to your buyers (consider the Moe’s example where they send two specials a month and pack the restaurant) and it also can provide buyers with the instant gratification they seek (Brock Built includes text for information messaging on their signs at for sale homes). When you include texting options on signs and ads, buyers can text you for information on your product, specials or upcoming event.

Of interest to retail business is a Research Brief from The Center for Media Research reports on a new survey commissioned by 1020 Placement and conducted by Harris Interactive. It finds that American consumers will accept opt-in mobile marketing messages from retail business. 42% percent of 18–34-year-olds and 33% of 35–44-year-olds with cell phones were interested in receiving alerts on their cell phones from places they frequent.

Have you effectively engaged your target audience via text messaging? Do you have a digital marketing strategy in place? Ask me, I can help!

There are several things we want him to understand sooner than later:

Stuff costs money and that money doesn’t grow on trees – you have to earn it, save it and work for it.

How to balance a bank account. How to both add and subtract money. AND that checking your balance doesn’t account for checks that you have written but that have not cleared the bank.

Having a debit or credit card should not give you feeling that you can charge, charge, charge. At some point you have to pay for it!

Saving money and investing is the key to financial freedom and potential future retirement. Saving just 20 cents of every dollar earned can amount to a lot over a lifetime.

Hopefully we can help him learn these lessons as a child. As an aside, I know a lot of children who have cell phones but don’t have a bank account. Which does your child have and why?

My friend, Ilyce Glink recently wrote a great post titled Top Three Financial Resolutions for the New Year. I encourage you to read it and set goals for your own financial freedom! And if you like my blog, please subscribe or link to it.
